London, July 28(ANI): A Conservative MP has been forced to say sorry after he branded the widely praised London Olympics ceremony as 'leftie multi-cultural crap' on Twitter.
The comments claimed the ceremony was more left wing than that which opened the 2008 Beijing Games in Communist China.
The Twitter account claiming to be that of Aidan Burley, the Tory MP for Cannock Chase carried these comments when the Olympic ceremony was going on at Stratford.
"The most leftie opening ceremony I have ever seen - more than Beijing, the capital of a communist state! Welfare tribute next?" Sky News quoted the tweet from @AidanBurleyMP, as saying.
"Thank God the athletes have arrived! Now we can move on from leftie multi-cultural crap. Bring back red arrows (sic), Shakespeare and the Stones!" Burley's other tweet said.
Meanwhile, Downing Street has quickly washed its hands off the incident, with a senior source saying: "We do not agree with him."
he tweets have caused a storm of criticism on the social networking site including from a fellow Conservative, Croydon MP Gavin Barwell.
"@AidanBurleyMP with respect, us Londoners are rather proud of the diversity of our city #nothingleftwingaboutit," Barwell tweeted in reply.
Another tweet from Burley's account said the previous comments had been misunderstood.
"Seems my tweet has been misunderstood. I was talking about the way it was handled in the show, not multi-culturalism itself," tweet said. (ANI)
