CRPF personnel pedal away in Kashmir

Jammu And Kashmir,Kashmir,Defence/Security, Tue, 24 Jul 2012 IANS

Srinagar, July 24 (IANS) Ninety CRPF personnel Tuesday began a 120-km cycle 'yatra' from here, a dramatic development in a state where security forces would not dare to ride bicycles until recently.

Inspector General B.N. Ramesh of the Central Reserve Police Force flagged off what was dubbed a "petrol free patrol" from Pantha Chowk in Srinagar to Nunwan in south Kashmir's Pahalgam town.

The 90 CRPF personnel include a deputy inspector general and four battalion commandants.

"The intention is to promote peace while conserving petrol and diesel," CRPF spokesman Sudhir Kumar told IANS here.
