London, July 23 (ANI): Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge has revealed his dream of playing in the London Olympics for Team GB was almost shattered after he got struck down by meningitis, but is now delighted after making a swift return to the squad.
The forward thought his Olympic dream was well and truly over after being hit with the killer bug three weeks ago, but an incredible recovery saw Sturridge play 45 minutes for Team GB against Brazil on Friday night with no adverse effects.
"I was really worried, because I was getting worse as the days went by. It was a very tough period. I went quickly downhill from the Thursday to the Monday. When you play football you feel invincible. You don't think this can happen to you," The Sun quoted Sturridge, as saying.
"You hear of people being struck down with meningitis but you never think it will be you. I thought that all my hopes and dreams of taking part in the Olympics were over. I left the hospital on the Friday and the following Tuesday I went to the club and did a jog," he added.
"I still had a headache and I was worried, thinking 'If we are meeting up next Monday there is not a chance I will be able to be involved'. But, fortunately, as the days went by I started feeling a lot better and did a lot of things at the club with no reaction," he said.
Sturridge further said: "I was delighted with how things went but still feared I would not be able to recover quickly enough. The Olympics are a lot bigger than football. It is not just about football. It is about being part of a huge spectacle. I have made the decision to be here because it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience." (ANI)
