Bijnor (Uttar Pradesh), July 19 (ANI): Muslim devotees here have started preparations for the holy month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the lunar Islamic calendar, that lasts 29 or 30 days according to the visual sightings of the crescent moon.

The caretaker of Jama Masjid here, Mohammad Shaukat on Thursday told reporters about the preparations that were being carried out in the mosque.

"We usually do preparations for the devotees, who come to offer prayers in this mosque during the month of Ramadan and make sure no one faces any problem. We want that the prayers should be offered comfortably," he said.

Renovation is in full swing in the mosque to make sure that people do not face any difficulties during the holy month of fasting.

"We have been working in the mosque since last month. Nearly 6-7 men are working. We are painting the mosque and working very hard," said Ramdas Kumar, a worker at the site.

The local markets are flooding with traditional sweets like 'khaja' and 'jalebi'.

It is believed that observing Roza for 30 days or 29 days (depending upon the sighting of moon) secures an individual a place in heaven and also brings them face to face with the Almighty on the day of judgement.

This year Ramadan would commence from Friday and would conclude with the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr on August 19 (depending on the sighting of moon).

Ramadan honours the revelation of the 'Holy Koran' to Prophet Muhammad and has traditionally been a time of religious fervour.

During this month, Muslims fast and do not consume food or water from dawn to dusk. They eat Sehri (a small pre-dawn meal) and at dusk, they break the daylong fast with the Iftar (evening meal). (ANI)
