London, July 18(ANI): Former professional boxer Oscar De La Hoya has said British boxer Amir Khan is far from finished and is just two wins away from his dream bout with Floyd Mayweather Junior.
De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions was in talks with Mayweather's camp about a possible December date with Khan before he was knocked out by Danny Garcia to end those discussions.
De La Hoya believes Khan can get back in the mix for a shot at the world's pound-for-pound king if he can bounce back from the second KO of his career with a couple of wins.
"I believe the Mayweather fight isn't dead because Amir Khan is a tremendous boxer and puncher," The Daily Mirror quoted La Hoya, as saying.
"We get him another win or two wins and he's back in the picture because of his talent and abilities. Amir Khan, he will be back. There's no question about that, Amir will be back," he added.
De La Hoya said Khan could take a leap back towards Mayweather by winning a rematch with champion Danny Garcia and picking up the WBC, WBA and Ring magazine light-welterweight belts.
La Hoya believes a rematch with Khan could be the most lucrative offer for Garcia, and he could ponder hard over it.
"We'll definitely have to analyse where Amir goes next and talk to his team and talk to Amir. But why wouldn't we want to see a rematch? Amir Khan was leading the whole fight," La Hoya said.
"There are different possibilities for Danny and Amir, but one of those possibilities is a rematch. Anything is possible. If it was a great fight, why not give the fans another great fight? That's what we believe," he added. (ANI)
