Patna, July 14 (ANI): Former Lok Sabha speaker and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-backed presidential candidate P.A. Sangma on Saturday said the upcoming presidential election would be the beginning of a movement for change.
Sangma said the people of the country were looking for a change, as they are angry and disappointed.
"The people of India are angry, people of India are disappointed looking for a change and I am a candidate because I believe that this presidential election should be the beginning of a movement for change," he said.
Sangma, who was here to garner support for his bid for the top constitutional post of the country, urged the leading political parties to back his candidature.I have come here to appeal to all political parties specially the ally of the NDA (National Democratic Alliance), JD-U (Janata Dal-United) and also Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, other political parties to rise above party line and vote for me in the coming 19th presidential election," he added.
Sangma also used the occasion to take potshots at the Congress Party, which he held responsible for corruption and also blamed the ruling party for the country's deteriorating economy.
"You talk of corruption, you talk of price rise, you talk of investment, you talk of GDP, you talk of industrial growth rate. We are at a worst position," he stated.
Senior Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) leader Ravi Shankar Prasad, who was also present on the occasion, said that Sangma would bridge the gap between northeast and rest of the country.
"He is the biggest bridge today in the public life of the country to link the northeast to the rest of the country. The manner in which he has carved a niche in the country, he is presenting himself as a suitable candidate for the presidential poll," said Prasad.
Sangma, who also enjoys the support of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the AIADMK, is pitted against Pranab Mukherjee.
