Political leaders grieve over Dara Singh's death

New Delhi, July 12 (ANI): Leaders of various political parties on Thursday expressed grief over the death of legendary wrestler, actor and former lawmaker Dara Singh, describing it a big loss to the nation.

Dara Singh, best known for his role as Hanuman in the television series 'Ramayan', passed away early this morning in Mumbai. He was 83.

Congress leader Harish Rawat said that Dara Singh was a super hero and in his demise the nation has lost a big brother.

"This is really sad news and Dara Singhji was not only a hero in acting, but was also a super hero. I got the chance to work with him during the election campaign in Delhi, and also got the opportunity to meet him in Parliament. His demise seems like loss of a big brother, it is very sad," Rawat told media here.

Paying homage to Singh, Janata Dal-United (JD-U) Chief Sharad Yadav said: "He was with me in the Rajya Sabha. He used to treat everybody equally. On his demise, I salute him for his glorious life and pay homage from my party side."

Samajwadi Party General Secretary Mohan Singh said Dara Singh made India proud through his wrestling.

"He was a matter of pride for India. Not just in wrestling, in freestyle wrestling and made his name across the world. His acting, especially in Ramayan, captured the public imagination," said Singh.

He is survived by his wife and six children - three sons and three daughters. One of his sons, Vindu Dara Singh, is a known name in showbiz.

Dara Singh, who has over 500 professional fights to his credit, played the role of Hanuman in the television adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayan. He also worked in some television serial shows, including Had Kar Di, which was aired on Zee TV.

He has acted in over 100 films. His last Hindi movie was Jab We Met, and last Punjabi movie was Dil Apna Punjabi. (ANI)
