New Delhi observes World Population Day

New Delhi, Wed, 11 Jul 2012 ANI

New Delhi, July 11 (ANI): A marathon to mark the World Population Day was organized here on Wednesday.

The event witnessed an encouraging turnout with residents coming in large numbers at India Gate, the venue for the run.

Prominent industrialist and lawmaker Naveen Jindal said it was worrying that the country's population was rising at a rapid pace.

"The world population has exceeded seven billion and this is a cause of worry for India, because the country has about 2.5 percent of the world's area and the population is 17 percent of the total population in the world. We should become responsible citizens and we should have a nuclear family," Jindal said.

He further emphasized on the need to seek measures to control the population.

"There are a lot of people who are not educated, so through education, health services, contraceptives and schemes, we can control the population. We have to stop the practice of child marriage and we must ensure that the age bar for marriage is raised," he said. (ANI)
