Amritsar, July 6 (ANI): Pakistan Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani on Friday said his country would need more substantial evidence to be convinced to act against perpetrators of the 26/11 terror strikes on Mumbai.
Speaking here after concluding two-days of talks with his Indian counterpart Ranjan Mathai in New Delhi, Jilani, replying to a question, said that: "in the absence of substantial evidence, the courts set people free. And that is the reality which we have to face".
Presenting Pakistan's point of view on the issue of it and India both suffering from the terrorism menace, he said: "If you recall, we had taken action against anybody who was accused of having done anything. We have to follow certain procedures; the same procedure is followed here. You have to have substantial evidence against in order to prosecute somebody".
Jilani further said: "I am absolutely convinced that terrorism is an issue which effects both the countries. We are both suffering because of terrorism. So, we need to cooperate on the issue seriously and sincerely. We have to move forward very quietly and candidly to resolve the issue."
He also justified his meeting with Hurriyat leaders at New Delhi before the foreign secretary-level talks, saying: "Kashmiris are the party in the dispute. We think that is an ongoing thing, so we have maintained a regular dialogue with Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control."
He, however, rejected certain media's reports that the meeting was stuck on the core issue of Kashmir.
"I don't think so. Media has a certain own point of view. In substantive term, I think we did a very good progress," he said.
On Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's proposed visit to Pakistan, he said: "These high level visits provide impetus to the dialogue process and to the peace process. The entire leadership and Pakistan are eagerly waiting for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to be in our country." By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)
