New Delhi, July 4 (ANI): India will not export 2 million tonnes of wheat at a stretch, due fluctuation in the prices of grains in the international market, Food minister K. V. Thomas said here on Wednesday.
Thomas had, on Tuesday, announced wheat exports from the government warehouses as a part of government's strategy to trim the bulging stocks to avoid the rotting of grains.
Presently, India has fixed the base price at $228 per tonne for wheat exports.
"We are not going to export the entire 2 million tonnes at a stretch. The idea is that we should get a better price. At the same time large chunk of the food grains should go out to the people of this country," Thomas said, on the sidelines of a conference.
He added that the government will monitor the international situation "because the prices in the international situation are firming up better."
India, the world's second largest wheat producer, has been struggling to manage huge stocks due to record harvests in recent years.
Thomas said they first target to clear wheat grains stored in the makeshift storage areas, which are at a higher risk of rotting.
"61 lakh kgs of wheat is kept in kachcha storehouses. We will move out that first. We cannot take the risk and I am very glad to say that damages is less than 0.06 percent," Thomas elucidated. (ANI)
