New Delhi/Lucknow, July 4 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday criticized United Progressive Alliance (UPA) presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee for having lunch with two convicted politicians at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's residence.
BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar used the incident to target the Congress Party, saying it shows the true character of the ruling party.
"Yesterday Congress exposed their candidate for the post of the President of India at a lunch ceremony at the chief minister's residence of UP. Two convicted politicians were present there, though they were on parole. So, this is what Congress stands for," said Javadekar
"I was expecting that at least Pranab Mukherjee will say something on this and will at least express regrets. But in the bargain of looking for votes, I think he has forgotten and Congress is also not coming forward. But this is the character of the Congress," he added.
Two convicted politicians, Mukhtar Ansari and Vijay Mishra, were spotted during the lunch hosted by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav at his 5, Kalidas Marg residence in Lucknow yesterday in honour of Pranab Mukherjee, who is all set to be the next President of India.
Pranab Mukherjee, who has been seeking the support of various political parties in the race to Raisina Hill, was in Lucknow yesterday. He also met Mayawati, chief of the Bahujan Samaj Party, which is supporting him for the President's post.
Mukherjee, who is the UPA's presidential candidate, is pitted against former Lok Sabha speaker P.A. Sangma, who is supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the AIADMK.
The presidential elections will be held on July 19. The vote count will take place on July 22.
