Assam floods: No respite for affected villagers

Guwahati , Thu, 28 Jun 2012 ANI

Guwahati, June 28 (ANI): Incessant rains that have triggered floods in Assam have left villagers stranded on roadside, without food and water.

The situation in Guwahati deteriorated further as continuous rainfall over past two to three days breached embankments, inundating several villages and towns.

Locals told reporters on Wednesday that prevailing situation is alarming as water levels were continuously rising.

Joydeep Sarkar, a local, said, "Condition is very bad. We are facing lot of problems as floods swept our houses. There is nothing to eat and no place to live. This village is completely submerged in water and there are two-three more villages which are reeling under floods."

A large number of people were forced to flee from their homes due to the sharp rise in the water levels.

Many people are camped on highways in makeshift shelters, and they complain of administration's apathy.

"Around 300 to 400 families are affected. The government is not doing anything about it. We have received no aid till now," said Shrideep Rai, another local.

The water level in various rivers of the state has risen due to incessant rainfall over the past few days.

Reportedly, the water levels of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries had crossed the danger mark at various places in the state. (ANI)
