Asansol (West Bengal) , Thu, 28 Jun 2012 ANI

Asansol (West Bengal), June 28 (ANI): A major fire broke out at a coal mine here, causing panic among residents of nearby villages and mine workers.

The villagers were worried that the fire, that broke out on Wednesday, would spread in the tunnel of the mine and cause a major explosion.

According to some locals, three illegal mines are already gutted.

"While working, we suddenly saw smoke emanating from the production area, and around 200 people were working in the factory," Ramu Ram, a local, said.

The fire spread to over one kilometre and was almost 200 meters away from reaching the nearby ECL mines.

No casualties or injuries were reported and the cause of fire is yet to be ascertained. (ANI)
