Kuki (Manipur)/ New Delhi, June 25 (ANI): Several students from the northeast, like every year, have applied for admissions to various Delhi University colleges this year too.

Though they have reservations about studying away from their respective native places, they believe Delhi offers them better education opportunities.

"Students from different parts of the country come to Delhi University as the level of education is higher. There is tough competition, but way back home, there are some socio political problems that affect education. New Delhi is much more free and we can easily develop our intellectual capacities," said Phalneilhing Kipgen , a student hailing from Kuki in Manipur.

Kipgen, who aims to become a civil servant, has applied for an honours course in political science in different colleges.

Trends suggest that most northeastern students prefer political science, botany, english and mathematics.

Various northeastern student organizations are helping applicants fill up forms, choosing colleges, finding accommodation and completing other basic formalities.hey also help them connect with members of their community residing here.

Volunteers working for the northeastern students have extended their support to the students.

Jangminthang Sampar, a volunteer with Kuki Students Organization, said, "We are helping every student from northeast who is coming to us. Most of them are Kukis, but others like Nagas have also come to us and we have welcomed them."

Another volunteer, Maivio from Naga Students Federation, informed that everyday over 200 northeastern students apply for various courses in Delhi University.

"Everyday 80 Naga students on an average approach us for admission and overall there are approximately 200 northeast students applying here daily," he said.

Prolonged militancy, shutdowns and strikes have affected the northeast, making students from the region opt for Delhi for higher studies.

"The issues with northeast are that there are lots of bandhs and other political problems, however, in Delhi we get good environment to study," said Jituw, a Naga student.

Naorem Santakruz Singh, Deputy Dean Students' Welfare, Delhi University, observed, "Northeast situation is volatile and most students are willing to shift, and the first place is Delhi." (ANI)
