Agartala (Tripura), June 24 (ANI): In a joint operation, the custom department as well as the Border Security Force (BSF) seized a Bangladeshi vehicle with illegal consignment of cloth that was being smuggled into Tripura.
Custom officials said they had received some information before hand, which is why they were easily able to recover the consignments.
Their operation was also aided by the BSF and they have taken all the illegal consignments into their custody.
"We had secret information that a Bangladesh vehicle would enter our territory with unauthorized clothes and so when we were searching this vehicle, we recovered several of readymade garments. The consignment came from Dhaka and we have taken everything in our custody. Border Security Force (BSF) has helped us in this operation," said Manabandra Banik, Custom Superintendent, Akhaura Land Port.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh vehicle bearing the registration number Dhaka-Metro-T 14-8182 is with held by the concerned authorities, while the driver and another assistant were being apprehended by the BSF.
The driver seemed unaware of the smuggled goods and added that he could not even read English to know what the consignments contained.
"The consignment has been loaded from Gulistan in Dhaka and we were informed that readymade garments would there be in the cartons. I am not aware of the declared price of the consignment, as the papers are with the officials and moreover, mention in English, which I cannot read," said Mohammad, driver of the vehicle.
However, according to customs department, there were a total of 104 cartons, with each one containing around 500 metres of cloth, making it one of the record seizures in the state.
Tripura has around 856 km border with Bangladesh, in which barbed wire fencing work is being initiated to prevent smuggling, trans-border crime, infiltration and movement of insurgents. (ANI)
