Thiruvananthapuram , Sun, 24 Jun 2012 ANI

Thiruvananthapuram, June 24 (ANI): The Trypanosomiasis disease, which spreads through flies, is affecting several animals at the zoo here.

However, zoo authorities claim that only a nine-year-old tiger named 'Rahul' has been affected by the disease, and is undergoing treatment.

A team of experts has vaccinated the zoo inmates, and the outbreak is said to be under control.

Kerala's Minister for Welfare of Backward Communities P. K. Jayalakshmi, has visited the zoo and evaluated the situation.

"The disease is under control now. The disease known as Trypanosomiasis has affected the animals. This disease is common in India in wild as well as domestic animals. Houseflies are spreading the disease. We have contacted the expert doctors and given the necessary vaccines to animals," Jayalakshmi said.

The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo has about 564 animals and birds.

Zookeepers were seen cleaning the premises as 'Trypanosomiasis' is transmitted by blood sucking flies. (ANI)
