1 in 12 teens have attempted suicide in U.S

New York, June 10 (ANI): Researchers have found that nearly 1 in 6 high school students in U.S has seriously considered committing suicide, while 1 in 12 have attempted it.

The semi-annual survey on youth risk behavior revealed that the attempted suicide rate for high school students has risen from 6.3 percent to 7.8 percent in the last three years.

The study showed that more female teens have attempted or considered suicide than males. The rate was found to be highest among Hispanic females, at 13.5 percent, and lowest among white males, at 4.6 percent.

Students struggled with suicide more during the first two years of high school - roughly around the ages 14 to 16. However, rates dropped off slightly when students reached junior and senior year, the New York Daily reported.

According to the survey, about 20 percent of high-schoolers claimed that they'd been bullied while at school, and 16 percent said they'd been 'cyberbullied' through email, chat, instant messaging, social media or texting.

Dr. Hector Adames, who is a neuropsychologist, told MSNBC that as more and more forms of communication spring up, there's opportunity for bullying to occur, which could eventually lead to an increased rate of attempted suicides.

"What happens with an increase in communication among students is that there's more pressure. There's more bullying," he said.

"When adolesence and children feel embarrassed, it's kind of like the end of the world for them," he added.

The CDC anonymously surveyed more than 15,000 high school students in the U.S. over a period of one-year, with a 95 percent confidence rate. (ANI)
