Mumbai, June 10 (IANS) Advanced medical techniques took a great leap forward in India with the arrival of a robotic arm for assisting in surgeries at the prestigious Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH) here, an official said Sunday.
Only the second such world-class facility offered in Mumbai after the Asian Heart Institute (AHI) in Bandra, the da Vinci robotic arm will be officially unveiled Sunday.
The robotic arm is already renowned around the world for allowing doctors to operate from a console with minimal invasion.
"The surgical operation is actually assisted by the robotic arm, and not performed by the robot," said Ram Narain, executive director of KDAH, erasing a widely-held misconception about it.
He explained that the da Vinci robotic arm holds the surgical instruments while the surgeons operating from a console control all its movements.
Prior to the official launch Sunday, the robotic arm has already carried out 12 successful minimal invasive surgeries.
Narain said that around 20 percent complications arising out of normal surgeries are eliminated when performed by the robotic arm in view of its precision without loss of blood or scars.
Presently, the da Vinci robotic arm is deployed for surgical procedures on the prostate, kidney and urinary bladder and is likely to be used for other surgeries gradually.
