Kollam (Kerala), June 2 (ANI): Kerala Police produced the two Italian sailors, charged with the murder of Keralite fishermen off the Needakara coast in February, before a local court here on Saturday.
Reacting to the development, special public prosecutor, Mohan Roy, said that according to the directive of the apex court the trial against the two Italians could proceed.
"In Supreme Court's order it is clear that the pendency of petition before the Supreme Court will not be a bar for conducting a trial here. So, the objection that the pendency is there cannot be taken as granted," Roy said.
He also raised objections to the submission of material objects such as compact discs containing the photographs of the vessel MV Enrica Lexie, and a video of the search procedure, and added that only documents could be produced before the court.
"I never objected to giving copies of the documents. The CDs were produced as material objects. So, copy of a material object cannot be given but any document can be given and that will be given," he added.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Kerala High Court (HC) had granted conditional bail to the marines, on deposit of Rs. 1crore each.
The court has also asked Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone to surrender their passports. The marines are not permitted to leave Kerala without the court's consent, and they have to report to the police everyday.
The sailors are currently lodged in Borstal school in Kochi, which houses juvenile delinquents. (ANI)
