Dip in militancy in Kashmir, says the state police chief

Srinagar , Thu, 31 May 2012 ANI

Srinagar, May 31 (ANI): There has been a significant drop in militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, said the state's Director General of Police (DGP) Kuldeep Khoda, here on Thursday.

Interacting with mediapersons, Khoda said the efforts of the government and the security forces should not be undermined, as they had taken all possible steps to combat militancy.

"If you look at the incidents of militancy, there was a time when the number of incidents was in thousands. Last year, the number of incidents was 195. This year in the first five months, the number of incidents has been just 45. And if the same pace continues then we are hopeful that the number of incidents would be below 100, in which many incidents are not considered of serious nature," he said.

Khoda informed that most of the top-level militant commanders were killed by the armed forces.

"The number of militants is less than 200 in the state, in which around 30 are in Jammu region and around 170 would be in Kashmir. Many top-level militant commanders have been neutralised. Many are still left, mainly the foot soldiers, they will also be dealt," he explained.

Reacting to Wednesday's incident of militant attack on armed personnel, Khoda said the matter is under investigation and the truth would be out soon.

"We are investigating yesterday's incident. The truth will soon come to light and then we will see what can be done further. Most likely these militants had come from outside and carried out the attack and returned," he said. (ANI)
