India to record fastest rate of Internet traffic growth in boom till 2016: Survey

Sydney, Thu, 31 May 2012 ANI

Sydney, May 31(ANI): The number of internet connections will reach 18.9 billion by 2016, mainly due to the explosion of smart phones, tablets and other hand held devices in market, with India expected to record the fastest rate of Internet traffic growth, according to an annual survey by Cisco Systems Inc.

In 2010, total Internet connections was recorded at 10.3 billion, and due to Internet connections reaching mobile phone, a boom in the Internet traffic is expected to grow in coming times.

India is expected to have the fastest rate of Internet traffic growth, followed by Brazil and South Africa, the survey revealed.

"More and more mobile devices are coming on the network that are causing this growth," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Doug Webster, a vice- president for San Jose-based Cisco, as saying.

Webster added in 2016, the volume of Internet traffic is expected to be measured for the first time in zettabytes or one trillion gigabytes.

Traffic in 2016 is expected to reach 1.3 zettabytes, or 110 exabytes per month, which is almost a fourfold increase from about 31 exabytes per month in 2011, the survey found.

This volume will be the result of the use of more devices, more users, more bandwidth available for transmission and greater use of video for entertainment and business, Webster added. (ANI)
