PDP criticizes J-K Govt. for suggesting corrupt official as next vigilance chief

Srinagar, May 29 (ANI): The opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference Government for suggesting the name of an allegedly corrupt official for the post of state vigilance chief.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti walked out of a meeting on Monday with the state chief, where consensus was sought over the name of the state's first Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC).

Mufti has said that the person backed by State Chief Omar Abdullah, senior police officer Kuldeep Khoda has cases of human rights violations and murder against him.

She alleged that Abdullah was trying to favour Khoda and manipulate the matter and corruption charges, which were levelled against himself.

"It seems likely the only reason why a person against whom allegations of human rights violations, very heinous human rights violations, true to a great extent by his own department, crime department, why he should be made chairman of such a sensitive organisation that is the state vigilance commission and it seems that may be it is a reward for the covering up of the Abdullah family, for covering up for the allegations of corruption," Mufti said during a media conference after she left the meeting midway.

Mufti, who attended the meeting in her capacity as the leader of opposition, added she did not find it fit to stay and let the name of the man be suggested as CVC who has serious charges levelled against him.

"I don't want to be party to, it seems another heinous crime is being committed because if you are appointing chairman, a person against whom you have serious charges of triple murder and you go ahead to appoint him, I could not stand here. So, as an opposition leader I had to move out of that room," she said.

Panellists in the meeting also included state's Law Minister, Ali Muhammad Sagar, and Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand who have sent names of the CVC and two other commissioners to Governor N N Vohra.

Speaking to media persons on Monday, Sagar confirmed that Mufti disagreed with one of the names suggested by the government.

"Yes, they did not agree with the government, with the names suggested by the panel," said Sagar.

Omar Abdullah has recently faced criticism for various charges of corruption and lawlessness against his ministers.

The government was also in the eye of the storm over the custodial death of National Conference (NC) worker Syed Muhammad Yusuf Shah. (ANI)
