Srinagar , Mon, 28 May 2012 ANI

Srinagar, May 28 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir will soon have gadgets to predict high-intensity earthquakes in the region.

The University of Kashmir, in collaboration with institutions from Bengaluru and Kolkata, plans to install 15 broadband seismographs in the quake prone state to monitor seismic activity.

The seismographs would be installed in Srinagar, Anantnag, Awantipora, Aru, Daksum, Aharbal, Gulmarg, Dodhpathri, Delina, Kupwara, Sonmarg, Drass, Kargil, Doda and Ramban.

The Head of the Department of Geology and Geo Physics at Kashmir University, Professor Shakeel Ramshoo, said the gadgets would help sensitise the state government and civil society about the likely occurrence of the earthquakes.

"Our objective is to have more than 40 Seismometers in every part of the state by the end of this year, then we will have a very good idea and a very high quality scientific data about the tectonic activity, what is happening in the interior of the earth," Ramshoo said here on Sunday.

Dr. Rakesh, member of Semax company from Bengaluru, said that the earlier machines had to be manually operated and monitored 24 hours. However, the new machines record the vibrations and signals automatically and the data is being transferred to the computers.

" Once they install the instrument at the station, it will automatically record the vibrations and the signals coming from the sub-surface," he informed.

The university has procured the seismographs and they would be installed in phases. (ANI)
