Kolhapur, May 23 (IANS) Three people were crushed to death and three others injured in a stampede Wednesday during a religious rath yatra (chariot procession) in Turkewadi village of Maharashtra's Kolhapur district, 100 km from here, police said.

"The victims came under the rath after a rope slipped and were crushed to death. The crowd walking behind the chariot ran ahead leading to a stampede," an official of the Chandgad police station told IANS. The police are yet to identify the victims.

The precession was halted for some time after the accident.

The rath yatra of Goddess lakshmi is taken out after a gap of 10 years in the district.
