New York, May 23 (ANI): A new trend of body image inspiration dubbed "fitspo," is replacing 'ThinSpo' on the web, according to bloggers.
As Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest are cracking down on "thinspo" content-images and articles that "inspire" readers to maintain eating disorders and achieve excessive thinness, "fitspo" is gaining ground as the latest trend in self-obsession.
According to blog Blisstree, 'fitspo' is the latest breed of "body-negative, obsession-spurring 'inspiration,'" the New York Daily News reported
"Fitspo aims to motivate you to hit the gym with photos of svelte, tanned women in sports bras and micro-shorts offering messages such as 'You don't always get what you wish for, you get what you work for' or 'Enjoy your pain, you've earned it.'
While the goals have shifted to achieving fitness and health over thinness, it's unclear if fitspo is 'just thinspo in sheep's clothing,'" wrote Blisstree.
"It's designed with good intentions at heart," according to blogger Lovelyish.
"Many of the images circulating the Internet for fit inspiration are emblazoned with work-out mantras. But the flip side, is that 'the same obsessive tendencies can be observed in overexercising,'" the site stated.
"At worst, fitspo can be seen as a thinly veiled misnomer for thinspo, putting emphasis on body image and nearly impossible standards," it added.
As cited by Blisstree, Chichi Kix, the trainer and writer behind the blog Fit Villains, wrote on Facebook: "Don't get me wrong: I love, LOVE seeing fit girls more and more often. I appreciate muscle. And it IS slightly more refreshing than images of thinner and thinner models. But considering that the majority of fitspo models still represent an unrealistic and unattainable ideal for most women, I don't think it's necessary to pair motivational messages with images of ripped, toned, albeit gorgeous ladies."
