Foreign Minister Krishna rules out pressure from Italy on marine issue

New Delhi, Tue, 22 May 2012 ANI

New Delhi, May 22 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna on Tuesday said there was no pressure from Italian Government on the marine issue, and added that the Central Government would not interfere in the judicial process.

"Well, I think when the judicial process is on, the Government of India is never known to interfere in the judicial process," said Krishna.

"Absolutely not," he added, when asked whether there was any pressure from the Italian Government with regard to this particular case.

A court in Kollam had earlier on Saturday rejected the bail application of the two Italian marines who are accused of killing two Indian fishermen off the coast of Kerala in February this year.

The marines, while on board Italian ship 'Enrica Lexie', had allegedly shot dead two Indian fishermen- Valentine Jalastine and Ajesh Bi - on February 15 mistaking them for pirates.

They were arrested on February 19 and sent to the Central Prison at Thiruvanathapuram

The case of the two marines has caused increasing diplomatic tensions between Rome and New Delhi. A dispute over who has the right to try the men is unresolved. (ANI)
