'Disgusting' pic of beer-drinking bride sparks outrage

Melbourne, May 16 (ANI): A bridal model was recently snapped swigging from a bottle of beer in wedding gown at a Bride of the Year competition in New Zealand.

However it wasn't all fun and games as the Taranaki Daily News found itself caught up in a storm of controversy over its decision to publish the photo of the beer-swilling bride on its frontpage.

The already married Katrina Hayman, 33, who delivers baby pigs for a living, suited up in white all over again for the Taranaki Bride of the Year competition but 'outraged' New Zealand.

However Hayman has tried to justify her act.

"At your wedding you're relaxed because you have your family and friends around for support but in the competition you are sort of all by yourself. It was quite stressful. That's why I was drinking a beer," News.com.au quoted Hayman as saying.

The competition's organisers, though, demanded an explanation from the newspaper for publishing the "disgusting" photo.

"As I am sure many would have preferred to have seen a photo on the front page of the winning bride of the year, rather than a free commercial for Tui," said co-convenor Lynn Gilbert-Smith.

The Daily's editor, Roy Pilott, ran an editorial defending the decision as the picture was fun, colourful and well-received.

"When you are in those situations you go with your instinct, and if a news editor ever calls me to say he wants to run a great shot, there would have to be a compelling reason not to back that call," he wrote. (ANI)
