Imphal, May 16 (ANI): The recent praise for movies from northeast India, has reinforced the cinematic talent of the region.
A Manipuri feature film earned rave reviews at the 59th National Film Awards.
The film, titled 'Phijigee Mani' focuses on the relationship between a mother and her son in insurgency affected Manipur. It was chosen as the best Manipuri film. Its director, Oinam Gautam Singh, was given a National Award.
The plot revolves around a young girl who sets out on a journey to bring changes and happiness in her family, but is disturbed by her memories.
Actress Leishangthem Tonthoingambi Devi played the protagonist and was felicitated for her work at the National Awards.
"If we make good films, we will definitely make it to the national and international awards, provided we maintain the quality of our work," she said.
A screening of the movie was held for Manipuris living in Delhi at the Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Both the director and the actress addressed the audience about their experiences with the film.
They also highlighted the financial crunch the movie industry in the northeast faces and appealed for support.
"We have to struggle a lot for becoming filmmakers. There is no filmmaking institute in the region, and one has to work hard, if he wants to become a filmmaker," said Singh.
Borun Thokchom from Manipur and Manoj Barpujari from Assam were the other national awardees.
There has been a rise in number of films being produced in the northeast. Youth are now taking up filmmaking as a full time career. (ANI)
