London, May 11(ANI): Manchester United has made it clear to the Football Association (FA) that they will only release veteran Ryan Giggs as the over age player for the Great Britain squad for London Olympics.
GB coach Stuart Pearce now won't have the option to pick anyone from Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand or Jonny Evans as over-23 players.
According to a 2008 court ruling, clubs have the right to refuse to release players for this competition, as it is not on the international calendar.
United have told the FA that they are only capitalizing on that position for the over-age players.
Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling could be part of the Olympic line-up if they are not picked for the England Euro 2012 squad.
Giggs, who hasn't played a major football tournament ever, has indicated he would accept an invitation. (ANI)
