New Delhi, May 10(ANI): Communist Party of India (CPI) leader, D Raja said on Thursday that the much-debated Lokpal Bill should be passed without the clause of Lokayukta, if the state governments are against it.
Several state governments have been at loggerheads with the Centre over the Lokayukta clause and media reports suggest that the Centre may drop the contentious clause.
Speaking to reporters here, Raja added that the clause meant that the federal structure of the country was being tampered with, and called for "proper balance of the centre-state relations".
"It is not only the aspiration of the regional parties, it is the demand of the states. Nothing should be done which undermines the rights of the state governments. We will have to maintain the proper balance of the centre-state relations. Here if you add the Lokayukta, it amounts to infringing upon the powers of the state governments," said Raja.
The Bill, which was passed by the Lok Sabha in December 2011, was taken up for a discussion and vote in the upper house. But after a marathon debate that stretched till midnight, voting could not take place for lack of time. (ANI)
