New Delhi, May 10 (ANI): Cutting across party lines, lawmakers of various political outfits on Thursday emphasized on the need to maintain hygiene in Rajya Sabha premises.
Reacting to the gas leak that took place inside the Rajya Sabha earlier today, Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar said: "It has become difficult to sit there. Either hold your nose and sit or put some paper before it. I am surprised that how can those who run the Rajya Sabha not see it. Generally, I hope that in the next two days before celebrating 60 years (of the Rajya Sabha) we sit in a House where we can breathe freely."
The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha will hold special sittings on Sunday to mark the 60th anniversary of the first session of India's Parliament.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said there might be a technical fault, which needs to be redressed.
"I was inside the Rajya Sabha when the foul smell started emanating. Honourable chairman was kind enough to adjourn the House. Surely there may be a technical fault, which needs to be redressed," he said.
Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Jaya Bachchan said she thought the smell was from the toilet.
"I thought it was the toilet. I didn't realize till somebody said may be it's the gas leak," she said.
The incident took place at around 11.30 a.m. during Question Hour today when a Congress lawmaker pointed out that there was a leakage of gas. Soon the other leaders made a similar complaint.
Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, who is the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, then adjourned the House for 15 minutes. (ANI)
