Munda's chopper mishap: Mulayam for improved safety measures

New Delhi/Ranchi , Wed, 09 May 2012 ANI

New Delhi/Ranchi, May 9 (ANI): Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Wednesday called for improved safety measures in all forms of travel.

Reacting to Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda's narrow escape after his helicopter crash-landed at the Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi, Mulayam said: "

Accidents take place not only in helicopter, accidents take place in all kinds of vehicles. There is a need to maintain safety. A system should be devised so that there is no inconvenience in travel."

Jharkhand Deputy Chief Minister Sudesh Mahato hoped the chief minister would recover soon from his injury.

"A team of doctors is monitoring him. We will talk about whatever questions are being raised with regard to the accident later. Right now, we should pray that he is relieved soon," he said.

A helicopter carrying Munda, his wife and three others crash-landed earlier today. The twin-engined helicopter, Agusta AW 109, crash-landed at the Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi, while trying to make an emergency landing following a technical problem.

All on board the chopper are safe, but have sustained injuries for which they are being treated at the Ranchi's Apollo Hospital. Munda has reportedly fractured an arm and has injuries on his leg.

It may be recalled here that Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorji Khandu was killed along with four others in May last year after their helicopter crashed in bad weather in a hilly terrain in the state.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy was killed in Kurnool district earlier in September 2009, when the helicopter carrying him crashed. (ANI)
