New Delhi, May 8 (IANS) Parliament remembered Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore on his 151st birth anniversary Tuesday.
Among those who paid floral tributes to the 'great son of India' in the Central Hall of parliament were Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, Leader of the House in the Lok Sabha and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
A booklet on Tagore, brought out by the Lok Sabha Secretariat in both Hindi and English, was presented to the dignitaries.
Tagore's portrait in the Central Hall had been unveiled by then president Rajendra Prasad on Sep 12, 1958 in recognition of his outstanding service to the nation.
Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said Tagore was a versatile figure whose novels and poetry enthralled freedom fighters.
'He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in literature in 1913 for his work 'Gitanjali'. The House fondly remembers this great son of India and poet-par-excellence,' she said.
In the Rajya Sabha, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said: 'India and Bangladesh are together celebrating Tagore's birth centenary as he composed the national anthems for both the nations.'
Leader of Opposition in the upper house Arun Jaitley said the power of language Tagore had is such that even those who do not know Hindi can get the feel. 'It shows the personality of India. Very few have left such footprint,' he said.
AGP MP Kumar Deepak Das and Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Shekhar Roy sang Rabindra Sangeet as a tribute to Tagore, prompting Trinamool member Derek O'Brien to tweet: 'Heard many speeches in the Rajya Sabha, first time heard a song.'
