New Delhi, May 7 (ANI): Congress leaders, including member of the Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand, Pradeep Kumar Balmuchu, met party chief Sonia Gandhi at her residence here on Monday.
Balmuchu led a team of MLAs from Jharkhand to brief Gandhi on the recent victory and informed her of Ahluwalia's attempts to woo the votes of independent legislators in his favour.
"We came here to discuss the election results with Sonia Gandhi. We briefed her on the process and how S.S. Ahluwalia locked a group of independent legislatives for two hours inside the speaker's room just to buy their votes, but all his efforts went in vain. Also we briefed her on the support provided by our partners, especially Lalu Prasad Yadav and his Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)," said Balmuchu.
He added that his victory was an indicator of the political shift in the state and that the Congress was set to form the next government.
"We are confident of forming the government in Jharkhand and the recent result showcase the overview of the state," Balmuchu said.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jharkhand on Thursday (May 03) suffered a major setback as its incumbent Member of Parliament S. S. Ahluwalia failed to retain his seat in the Rajya Sabha.
The two seats being polled for were won by Congressman Pradeep Kumar Balmuchu and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate Sanjiv Kumar.
Sixty eight votes were cast out of the total 81. Of these, the Congress bagged 25, the JMM 23, and the BJP 20 votes. (ANI)
