Sankaranarayanan sworn in as Maharashtra governor for second term

Mumbai, May 7 (IANS) Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan was sworn in as the governor of Maharashtra for a second term at the Raj Bhavan here Monday.

 

Chief Justice Mohit Shah of the Bombay High Court administered the oath of office to the governor.

 

Chief Secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad read out the Warrant of Appointment of the Governor issued by the President of India.

 

The governor was presented a ceremonial guard of honour by the Indian Navy on the occasion. A 17 gun-salute was given to the governor at the Naval Coast Battery as soon as he arrived to inspect the guard of honour.

 

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, chairman of the Maharashtra legislative council Shivajirao Deshmukh, speaker of the legislative assembly Dilip Walse Patil, speaker of the Kerala legislative assembly G. Karthikeyan, Minister for PWD & Tourism Chhagan Bhujbal, Minister for Protocol Suresh Shetty, Leader of Opposition Vinod Tawde and other senior ministers and officials were also present at the ceremony.

 

After an illustrious political career starting 1946, Sankaranarayanan, was appointed as the governor of Nagaland Feb 3, 2007 and subsequently served as the governor of Jharkhand between July 26, 2009 and Jan 21, 2010.

 

He was transferred to Maharashtra on Jan 22, 2010. He also held the additional charge of the post of governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Goa. He, thus, has the distinction of serving six states as governor.

 

Sankaranarayanan completed his first five-year term on Feb 2, 2012. By an order dated April 28, 2012, the President of India granted him a fresh term as the governor of Maharashtra.
