17 dead in Punjab road accident

Moga (Punjab), May 07(ANI): At least 17 people were killed in a road accident on Monday morning when an overcrowded jeep rammed into a speeding truck.

The jeep was carrying pilgrims, who were heading home after visiting a holy shrine in Nanaksar. It collided with the truck that was trying to overtake another vehicle from the opposite side.

The deceased include five women, five children and seven men.

Moga police chief, Satpal Singh, told reporters that 14 people had died on the spot and three had succumbed in hospital.

"These people were going home after visiting a shrine in Nanaksar. While they were returning from the Ferozpur side, their vehicle collided with a truck. 17 passengers in the vehicle have died, 14 died on the spot and three succumbed to their injuries in the hospital," said Singh.

Police has registered a case of negligent driving against the truck driver who is absconding. (ANI)
