Breached Teesta canal worries farmers in West Bengal

Siliguri , Sun, 06 May 2012 ANI

Siliguri, May 6(ANI): West Bengal have expressed distress over the breached Teesta canal, which they say has resulted in scarce water supply to their paddy fields.

Approximately 70 meters of the canal was damaged a week back, causing damage to hundreds of acres of paddy fields.

The breached canal has flooded many areas, including Mantadhari village and the water had entered nearby forests and farmlands.

Speaking to mediapersons on Sunday, Gopal Roy, a farmer said they were facing problems because of the shortage of water supply to their fields.

" The paddy crops are drying up. There is no water. The water supply was supposed to be resumed a week ago but no progress yet," said Roy.

The farmers had urged the state government to provide them with adequate water supply.

"The canal is broken and has no water. If the canal gets water supply then it will be better for us and in case it is not possible then our field will dry. We request the government to provide water supply to our fields," said another farmer, Sujit Barman. (ANI)
