We would be naive to think corruption in cricket doesn't exist, says Tim May

Islamabad, Sat, 05 May 2012 ANI

Islamabad, May 5(ANI): Tim May, chief executive officer of the Federation of International Cricketers Association (FICA), an organization formed to protect the interests of all professional cricketers, has said it is na?ve to think cricket is clean from corruption.

May has expressed his concern over the ever-present danger of corruption in cricket, and feels that cricket boards round the world should actively seek information from players to curtail this threat.

Even as it may be true that as a result of the much-publicized conviction of the Pakistani trio of Mohammed Amir, Mohammed Asif and Salman Butt, the menace of 'spot fixing' and associated crimes would have been dealt a body blow, but May believes that these convictions could simply be the tip of the iceberg, which needs constant effort and vigilance from the authorities.

"I'd like to think that cricket was clean at the moment, but I think I'd be naive to think that. There's always chatter amongst players that something's not looking appropriate or whatever. If cricket was clean, I don't think we'd have the ACSU there anymore, but the ICC's ACSU is still there, they're busy," PakPassion.net quoted May, as saying.

" People are still approaching players, we're well aware that people are still approaching players to conduct themselves in these activities. I think we'd be naive to think that some player, somewhere hasn't accepted that, whether by being forced into that situation by some sort of blackmail, or he has decided that he'll take that risk," he added.

"I don't think that we can be naive to say that it doesn't exist in the game. Again, I don't know that that's a fact, but I think it would be naive to think otherwise," he said. (ANI)
