Mamata still against NCTC

Delhi,Politics, Fri, 04 May 2012 IANS

New Delhi, May 4 (IANS) A day before the crucial meeting of chief ministers on the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continued to oppose the proposed anti-terror hub.

Talking to reporters after her meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to seek moratorium on interest payment, Banerjee said both the central government and states had their boundaries which cannot be crossed.

"NCTC is interference with federal structure," she said.

Banerjee said the government move on NCTC was not discussed with states and a notification was issued.

"This is also not fair," she said.

Banerjee was among the chief ministers who had opposed the central government's move on NCTC on the grounds that it encroached on the rights of states.

Except for Banerjee whose party is an ally of Congress both in West Bengal and at the centre, other chief ministers opposed to NCTC belonged to parties opposed to the Congress.

The central government has agreed to dilute some of its discretionary powers to push through NCTC, so that it can pass muster with states opposed to it.
