Literacy programme for jail inmates in Kanpur

Kanpur, Apr 2 (ANI): The jail authorities in Kanpur conducted a literacy programme for the inmate with the aim to educate them and make them self reliant.

Highlighting the importance of education in the life of prisoners, S. H. M. Rizvi, Jail Superintendent, Kanpur District Jail, said: "The main aim is to educate them, so that, after they are released, they can apply the knowledge which has been imparted to them."

" It will help them in connecting to the mainstream of the society and also it would prevent them from committing crime again, as education provides us an opportunity to acquire knowledge, which will help them in becoming responsible citizens of the country," he added.

The prisoners would be given certificates once they complete their education.

Rahul Kumar, a prisoner said he was confident that he would that he would be join the mainstream on release.

"I am feeling good. The teacher makes us learn many things and whatever I have learnt here, I will apply it when I will be released from here," Kumar added.

The programme also features competitive examinations conducted by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

Prison authorities across various parts of the country are coming up with several projects with in a bit to improve the lives of the prisoners. (ANI)
