London, Mar 24(ANI): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said talented midfielder Jack Wilshere will not play for England in the Euro Cup until and unless he proves his fitness to the club, and plays few games for them first.
Wilshere has not played a competitive game since England's 2-2 draw with Switzerland in June, and Wenger reckons he is still at least five weeks away from his comeback after missing the entire season with an ankle injury.
"If Jack has played some games before the end of the season then it's a possibility he could go to the Euros. If he has not played at all, then I don't think it's realistic," The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.
"I will only intervene if I believe he is at risk medically, If all goes well he will be back in full training in three weeks and then another two weeks to get match fit. But that is not certain yet. His last scan was positive and if he has no more setbacks then I think he will play again this season," he added.
Wenger said the club has kept a very cautious approach with Wilshere to ensure that he doesn't suffer another setback.
"But we have gone for a very cautious attitude with him and we will not force him into training with any pain. So we might have to be slower than expected. I would rather him go to the Euros than the Olympics. The Olympics destroy the start of next season for us," Wenger said.
"His position today is that he is back working with the ball and that is a huge step because the work we do with a ball is always demanding," he added. (ANI)
