'Priyanka has every right to campaign for Rahul', says Singhvi

New Delhi, Tue, 17 Jan 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Jan 17 (ANI): Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Tuesday said Priyanka Gandhi had every right to campaign for her brother Rahul Gandhi in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh.

"Are you suggesting that Priyanka Gandhi has lost her rights as a citizen to exercise her free speech to campaign, whether for the Congress Party or for her brother or in a particular locality, or in the whole of UP," said Singhvi.

"She is certainly entitled to contribute to the whole campaign in whichever way she likes, it's her decision," he added.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi earlier today criticized the ruling Congress Party for roping in Priyanka Gandhi to campaign in Uttar Pradesh, and said that people don't vote any more by seeing the face of the campaigners, but on the basis of work of political parties.

Priyanka Gandhi earlier in the day said that she will do anything to help her brother in the upcoming assembly elections.

Priyanka, who began her three-day campaign from Congress stronghold Amethi, said: "Whatever is required of me, I will do what ever he requires me to do."

Priyanka further said that as of now she is concentrating on fewer constituencies, but if required she will campaign in other parts of the state as well.

"For now, I am going to oversee the election in these 10 constituencies which fall in our parliamentary constituencies and after that I will see, if Rahul wants me to campaign I will campaign," she added.

Priyanka, however, denied the rumours of her joining active politics, and said that she is yet to take a final call on the issue.

Congress has six of the ten assembly seats in Amethi and Rae Bareli Parliamentary Constituencies. Rahul Gandhi represents Amethi, while Rae Bareli is represented by Sonia Gandhi.

The assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh is seen as an opportunity for the Congress party to re-establish its foothold in its erstwhile political base in the country's fifth largest and most populous state.

Polls in Uttar Pradesh are to be conducted in seven phases between February 8 and March 3. The counting of votes would take place on March 6.ttar Pradesh will elect a new 403-member state assembly in March, and the poll results are expected to broadly indicate trends for 2014 general elections.
