Germany to honour Paul the Octopus with shrine

London , Tue, 18 Jan 2011 ANI

London, Jan 18 (ANI): Paul the Octopus, who amazed people with his predictions during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, is to be honoured with a "Paul Corner" at his former house nearly three months after his death.

Paul died at his home in Oberhausen in October 2010 at the age of nearly three years.

The Telegraph quoted a centre in western Germany as saying that a 1.80 metres high statue of Paul along with his ashes would be placed at his former home.

"There will be a statue around 1.80 metres high (six feet) of Paul, on top of a football, in the middle of which will be a see-through window with the golden urn containing Paul's ashes," spokeswoman Tanja Munzig said.

Paul rose to fame by predicting seven German matches correctly and also Spain's 1-0 victory against the Netherlands in the finals.

For the prediction, two boxes were lowered into the salty soothsayer's tank, each containing a mussel and the flag of the two opposing teams.

Following his death, his fans posted hundreds of condolence messages on Facebook.

The aquarium unveiled a replacement, French octopus named Paul II, on November 3. (ANI)
