Former Windies batsman Joey Carew passes away

Sydney , Mon, 10 Jan 2011 ANI

Sydney, Jan 10(ANI): Former West Indies opening batsman and chairman of selectors Joey Carew died on Saturday at the age of 73.

Carew had played 19 Tests from 1963 to 1972, during which his sole century came against New Zealand at Eden Park in 1969.

He went on to serve as a selector for the West Indies Cricket Board for 20 years, in three separate stints, retiring from the post in 2006.

"The loss of Joey - who remained passionate about the game at all levels until the very end - is one which leaves West Indies cricket poorer," the Age quoted WICB Chairman Julian Hunte, as saying in a statement.

Carew was also former West Indian captain Brian Lara's childhood coach and mentor. (ANI)
