Snowfall to help apple crop in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, Sat, 01 Jan 2011 ANI

Srinagar, Jan.1 (ANI): Apple growers have welcomed snowfall in the Jammu and Kashmir.

The valley witnessed the maiden snowfall of the season on December 30.

Apple growers every year eagerly await the snowfall, as it would fulfill the chilling hours required for apple fruit.

Eijaz Ahmad, an apple grower, said he is very happy to see the snowfall as it enhances the production of the fruit.

"Due to snowfall in our gardens there is a feeling of happiness as it enhances the production of crops. Rainfall here is for very less duration, but snowfall stays for a longer period," said Ahmad.

Snowfall has brought the two-month long intense dry cold wave, which was severely affected the yield of apples and other fruits, to an end.

The climatic change in Himalayan region due to global warming has resulted in less rain and snowfall.

The apple farmers and other fruit growers have suffered huge set back due to the dry weather leading to huge financial loss. By Fayaz Ahmad (ANI)
