Kolkata HIV patients play soccer to celebrate World Aids Day

Kolkata, Thu, 02 Dec 2010 ANI

Kolkata, Dec 2 (ANI): HIV patients played a soccer match with Mohun Bagan's junior team on the occasion of World Aids Day here to spread awareness about the disease.

The match was organised by the Society for Community Intervention and Research and Medical Bank.

The secretary of a Medical Bank, D. Ashis, said the spirit of the game was representative of the fighting spirit of the HIV/AIDS affected patients.

He further said that West Bengal's most favoured game was the best means to spread the word.

The patients with their fighting spirit played tough game to the junior team and even grabbed the trophy.

" We want to disseminate a message to people that we too can fight the world like others. We may be suffering from a disease otherwise but we are perfect," said Ranjit Panja, a participant.

In March, the World Bank and other agencies said India would have to scale up prevention of HIV to avoid spending an increasing share of its already low budget on treatment of HIV/AIDS patients. (ANI)
