Cabinet approves Ministerial dialogue on Climate Change, technology mechanism

New Delhi, Nov.4 (ANI): The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the exchange of letters of agreement between the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UND) and the Government of India towards organizing the Informal Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Change : Technology Mechanism."

 

The decision taken by the Union Cabinet today is meant to make provision of necessary privileges and immunities to the participants invited by the United Nations in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and the Convention on the privileges and immunities of the United Nations during the conference.

 

The Government of India, in cooperation with the Government of Mexico that will be the President of the 16th Conference of Parties to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Cancun, and the United Nations DESA will organize an Informal Ministerial Dialogue on 'Climate Change: Technology Mechanism' between Nov. 9 to 10, 2010 in New Delhi.

 

The Delhi Dialogue will enable the Ministers from about 50 countries to discuss and develop consensus on the design of a global technology mechanism for development, deployment and delivery of clean technologies in the context of climate change to developing countries.

 

Ministers and high-level representatives from Governments drawn from different regions and political groups as also the international organizations involved with the issue have been invited to the Dialogue.

 

The ministerial dialogue, 2010 will be a follow up of the high-level conferences on 'Climate Change: Technology Development and Transfer' held in the national capital in October, 2009.

 

The agreement will facilitate involvement of UNDESA (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs) and GOI towards organising the Ministerial Dialogue which will play an important role in advancing the dialogue amongst the parties on technology related issues in the context of the upcoming climate change negotiations at Cancun in Dec., 2010.

 

Since UNDESA is a co-host of the event, the approval of Cabinet will enable the experts, representatives and other international participants invited by the UNDESA to receive the privileges and immunities as admissible to UN representatives under the Vienna Convention. (ANI)
