Bell may face more punishment over breaking zero-tolerance alcohol policy at Delhi CWG

Wellington, Oct 20 (ANI): Commonwealth Games silver medallist Daniel Bell may still suffer more punishment for breaking a New Zealand swimming team zero-tolerance alcohol policy.

Stuff.co.nz quoted Swimming New Zealand chief executive Mike Byrne, as saying that a decision is yet to be taken whether or nor Bell would face further punishment.

Byrne's comments contradicted Jan Cameron, the organisation's performance and pathways director, who earlier today said that no further action would be taken against the 20-year-old silver medallist in the 100 metre backstroke.

"I was surprised by that comment from Jan and I will have to work through that with her. I am in the process of setting up a meeting with Daniel sometime next week. There needs to be a formal review of what happened," Byrne added.

This is the third time that Bell has been involved in an alcohol-related incident during his overseas trip with a New Zealand team.

Last year he was admitted to hospital in Rome after he suffered from excessive alcohol intake following the completion of the world championships.

In the Delhi Commonwealth Games, Teammates Dean Kent, Corney Swanepoel and Cameron Gibson were expelled from the New Zealand team and the athletes' village after taking a photo of Bell in a drunken state sitting on the toilet at a social function at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. (ANI)
