Auckland, Oct 15(ANI): Swimming New Zealand (SNZ) Chief Executive Mike Byrne has confirmed that Delhi Commonwealth Games silver medallist Daniel Bell was sent home from India for breaking SNZ's zero-tolerance alcohol protocol.
Byrne said that Bell had "a couple of beers" after the men's 100metre backstroke event.
It is the third time in the past two years that Bell has been involved in an alcohol-related incident while overseas with the New Zealand team.
"We had a team protocol that was in place which was one of zero-tolerance to alcohol and unfortunately Daniel broke that policy, so he was sent home immediately," the New Zealand Herald quoted Byrne, as saying.
"He didn't do anything wrong apart from the fact he broke the team protocol. Everyone knew there was zero tolerance, it's a decision we've taken because we've had issues in the past with alcohol."
"Daniel chose to have a couple of beers and he's paying the price," he added.
The SNZ chief further said that he would wait to discuss the incident with team management before deciding whether further action would be taken against Bell.
"We need to have a sit down with the rest of the management when they get back, have a discussion and about it and review what we do," he added. (ANI)
