India demands strict action against culprits of Oz police racist email scam

New Delhi , Sat, 09 Oct 2010 ANI

New Delhi, Oct 9 (ANI): External Affairs Minister SM Krishna today expressed shock over the circulation of a racist email targeting Indians, and asked the Australian authorities to take strict action against the culprits.

After a series of attacks on Indian students in Australia, a racist e-mail scandal has broken out showing Victoria Police officers joking about a video, which shows an Indian passenger on the roof of a train getting electrocuted as he touches the high-tension wires.

According to the Herald Sun, the police officers have been implicated for circulating a video of an Indian man getting electrocuted while sitting on top of a train and joking that it could be a way to fix Melbourne's Indian student problem.

"Implication of officers in such behavior, specially vis-à-vis Indian community is shocking and a matter of grave concern, such attitudes have no place in any society,' Krishna told reporters.

"We understand investigation is already underway, we sincerely hope that apart from taking action against concerned officers the Australian authorities will also take necessary and effective measures to address concerns about safety of all people of Indian origin in Australia," Krishna added.

The Ministry of External Affairs today summoned High Commissioner of Australia Peter Varghese to register its annoyance over the racially offensive email being circulated among Victorian police officers.

Secretary (East) Latha Reddy also issued a demarche to High Commissioner Varghese on this matter.

According to Ministry of External Affairs release: "It was conveyed to Australian envoy that such an entrenched bias among sections of law enforcers towards the Indian community is a matter of serious concern. Such behavior and attitudes had no place in any society." (ANI)
